Making Education Work Better for Patient Care

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES AND COLLABORATIONS

 

A major challenges for health services in containing spiralling costs, is to prevent people from getting ill in the first place. Disease prevention and health promotion initiatives can have powerful effects on the public’s ability to “keep well”. Furthermore, educating professionals in prevention and early detection strategies and techniques can also contribute to cost reductions.

Building collaborative educational programs that deliver lasting results requires an in-depth understanding of audience needs. Tailoring the education to the audience’s learning preferences, creating a variety of formats and developing communications that collect information and extend the education relationship all contribute to changing practice through learning.

Management of therapies and their side effects is key to minimizing adverse events and hence costs associated with emergency admissions etc. Suppliers can play a major part in providing scientific and balanced information to assist professionals and patients in understanding how their treatment works and what to do/who to call if problems occur. Sharing this information in the most appropriate form ultimately raises standards of care and efficiencies within the health service.

BREAST CANCER TRAIN THE TRAINER PROGRAMME

The 2-day Breast Cancer Train the Trainer program run in collaboration with ISNCC and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has provided training for cancer nurses from developing countries and helped them to set up programmes for their patients. Monitoring the progress of these developments has enabled assessment of the effect of this education.

PATIENT EDUCATION

Educating the patient is also an important part of improving outcomes. Adherence and information programmes play a significant part in helping patients to feel involved in their treatment and contribute to decisions. Developing materials that match levels of understanding and geodemographic profiles of patient audiences can greatly increase the chances of success for the program. Segmenting the audience in order to vary the message can further enhance results.
